Parents, I realize that you and students have many questions regarding the band schedule for next year, as Southside will now be on a 7 period day. Mrs. Probst and I, the administrators and counselors have been working together in order to come up with a schedule that best benefits all of our students. Please review the schedule breakdown below for questions regarding which class to sign up for.
As always, please contact the band office with any questions or concerns you might have.
SHS Band Classes Offered 2014-2015 (year round)
PERCUSSION CLASS: All percussion students 9th-12th grade
All percussion students should sign up for percussion class. Students will be given more intensive instruction on the percussive arts and have opportunities for 1 on 1 instruction.
Percussionists will be assigned parts for concert band with either Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble during concert season. (Percussion students will meet with their concert band in afterschool rehearsals. Percussionists WILL NOT be enrolled in two band classes.)
All members of the SHS Band are required to be instrumental members participating in both marching band and concert band. Concert band will begin at the conclusion of football season. SHS will offer 2 band classes and students will be placed by audition.
*Percussion student will participate with the marching band and one concert band but will only enroll in the Percussion Class.
WIND ENSEMBLE: 10th – 12th Grade Only
Wind Ensemble will be the top concert band. Students will be placed into Wind Ensemble based on audition.
SYMPHONIC BAND: 9th – 12th Grade
Symphonic Band will be the largest concert band. Students will be placed into Symphonic Band based on audition. *All 9th graders will be members of the Symphonic Band.
**Marching Band Auxiliary Members (Colorguard, Danceline, Majorettes)**
Please note, that as of 2010, all auxiliary members of “The PRIDE” must also be year-round instrumental members as well as march one year on their instrument in order to audition for the auxiliary units. This policy is still in effect and only students entering the 11th & 12th grade will be “grandfathered” into the old policy.
All 9th – 10th grade auxiliary members must still be instrumental members and will be placed into one of the two band classes.
In order to aid with dual enrollment and other scheduling conflicts, any 11th or 12th grade “non instrumental” member of The PRIDE will be allowed to drop band class at the completion of the “fall semester” and receive a ½ credit for band. These students will have the option of signing up for a ½ credit elective afterwards. For more information here, please contact your counselor.
